See who is at the gate before you open it

An intercom is the conversation that happens before a door or a gate moves. Apartment call boxes, lobby stations, warehouse yard gates, and driveway pedestals all do the same job: let the person inside identify the visitor and decide whether to release the strike or the gate operator. Video matters more than a speaker alone. A voice on a box can belong to anyone. A face on a screen, or on your phone if you are not standing in the office, is harder to fake.

Outdoor stations in the Valley sit in full sun for most of the year. We use housings and screens rated for that heat, and we mount them where a driver can reach the button without leaving the car when the property is a vehicle gate. Directory panels for multi-tenant buildings list the units that should be callable and hide the ones that should not. Indoor monitors, a front-desk master, or a phone app can all be the answering side. Many properties use more than one.

Properties that need one

Gated communities where residents are tired of a keypad code that half the neighborhood knows. Apartment and condo buildings that need a directory instead of a buzzer wired to a single unit. Offices that want the receptionist to see the lobby before walking over. Shops and yards with a gate on the alley. Houses with a long driveway where the doorbell on the front door never hears the car at the street. If people arrive when nobody is standing at the entrance, the station has to reach a phone, not only a box on the kitchen wall.

How we put one in

We start by choosing audio, video, or both, and by finding a mount that is readable at noon and at night. Then we trace how the door or gate actually unlocks. Some strikes are already in place. Some operators need a new relay, and we do not guess at a gate motor. Directory names, ring groups, and which phones may release the entrance get programmed next. We test from the sidewalk and again from a phone that is off the property, because a station that only works when you are standing next to the indoor monitor is not finished.

Intercom questions

Can residents or staff answer from a phone?

Yes, on systems we spec for that. A call from the pedestal can ring a mobile app as well as an indoor monitor. The person who answers can talk to the visitor and release the entrance without walking to the gate. We program which users have that permission so not every phone on the account can open the door.

Will this work with the gate operator we already have?

Often it will. Most vehicle-gate operators accept a dry-contact trigger from an intercom relay. We look at the operator on site before we promise a match. If the motor is too old or the control board is damaged, we will say so instead of wiring a new station to a gate that will not move.

Do we have to replace the whole access system?

Not by default. An intercom can sit beside an existing keypad or card reader and only handle the visitor conversation. If the reader, the credentials, or the lock schedule also need to change, we will scope that separately. The goal is to add the missing piece, not to rip out hardware that still does its job.
